Even after running a business for over 30 years, there were many things I didn’t know until I met CPA Sung S. Jung early last year.

Our hospital, Painless Clinic DBA UNI Clinic, is a pain management and neurology specialty clinic that started in Renton in June 1999. As a small business with approximately 2,500-3,000 patients annually, 95% of whom are non-Korean, we have three full -time employees and four contract employees. Since opening in June 1999, we have worked with three different accounting firms, and on July 15, 2022, we have entrusted our hospital's financial management to the office of Mr. Jung Sung-Su at J&J Tax and Accounting Firm. As the hospital operator, I would like to share my experience with Mr. Jung's office over the past 15 months.

In fact, we hesitated a lot before switching accounting firms. This is because, as business owners, we had to lay bare all of our financial details to the accountant, including our assets, income, debts, and hospital management. It was not an easy decision to meet a new accountant and expose all of that once again. However, before we made the decision to switch, we had several consultations with Mr. Jung. His sincerity, profound knowledge of tax laws, and detailed advice on areas where we could save on taxes and how we should plan for retirement made us realize that we could trust him as our final accountant.

During our tax filing in 2022, Mr. Jung went through each item on forms 1120-S and 1040, explaining in detail why each number was there. He also gave us advice on how we could save on taxes going forward. It was a completely different experience compared to the previous years when we simply signed the tax report with the instruction, "Sign here." Additionally, after 23 years of operating the clinic, we learned for the first time that we could claim unpaid bills patient as a “bad debt” tax deduction, which led to significant tax savings. The fact that we could claim unpaid medical fees as a tax deduction instead of sending them to collections was a huge turning point for our hospital. Why hadn't the previous three accountants mentioned this? If we had known earlier, we wouldn't have wasted time and energy trying to collect payments from patients, and we could have simply claimed the tax deduction. It was a missed opportunity, and we regretted not knowing sooner.

Moreover, Mr. Jung didn’t only help with the hospital’s finances but also provided valuable insight and sharp advice regarding our personal future plans, including long-term care and retirement preparation.
